It is truly meet to bless thee, O God-bearer, ever blessed and most unblemished, and the mother of our God. More honourable than the Cherubim, and truly more glorious than the Seraphim, without corruption, having borne God the Word; who art the God-bearer, thee do we magnify. Prostration.

 

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. Bow.

 

Now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.  Bow.

O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, for the sake of the prayers of thy Most-Pure Mother, by the power of the Honourable and Life-giving Cross, and of my holy guardian Angel, and for the sake of all the saints, have mercy and save me a sinner, for thou art Good, and the Lover of mankind. Prostration without the sign of the cross.

O Heavenly King, Comforter, True Spirit, which art everywhere and fillest all, Treasury of blessings and giver of life: come and dwell in us; and cleanse us from every defilement, and save our souls, O Good One.

 

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. Thrice with bows.

 

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. Now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

 

Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. O Lord, cleanse us of our sins. O Master, pardon our transgressions. O Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities for thy names sake.

 

Lord have mercy. Thrice Glory. Now and ever.

 

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed thy name. The kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our needful bread. And forgive us our debts, even as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Psalm 26. Judge me, O LORD, for I have walked in mine integrity: I have trusted also in the LORD without wavering. Examine me, O LORD, and prove me; try my reins and my heart. For thy lovingkindness is before mine eyes; and I have walked in thy truth. I have not sat with vain persons; neither will I go in with dissemblers. I hate the congregation of evil-doers, and will not sit with the wicked. I will wash mine hands in innocency; so will I compass thine altar, O LORD: That I may make the voice of thanksgiving to be heard, and tell of all thy wondrous works. LORD, I love the habitation of thy house, and the place where thy glory dwelleth. Gather not my soul with sinners, nor my life with men of blood: In whose hands is mischief, and their right hand is full of bribes. But as for me, I will walk in mine integrity: redeem me, and be merciful unto me. My foot standeth in an even place: in the congregations will I bless the LORD. 

 

Psalm 31. Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile. When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long. For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my moisture was changed as with the drought of summer.  I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. For this let every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found: surely when the great waters overflow they shall not reach unto him. Thou art my hiding place; thou wilt preserve me from trouble; thou wilt compass me about with songs of deliverance.  I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will counsel thee with mine eye upon thee. Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose trappings must be bit and bridle to hold them in, else they will not come near unto thee. Many sorrows shall be to the wicked: but he that trusteth in the LORD, mercy shall compass him about. Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.

 

Psalm 56. Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me; for my soul taketh refuge in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I take refuge, until these calamities be overpast. I will cry unto God Most High; unto God that performeth all things for me. He shall send from heaven, and save me, when he that would swallow me up reproacheth;  God shall send forth his mercy and his truth. My soul is among lions; I lie among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword. Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens; let thy glory be above all the earth. They have prepared a net for my steps; thy soul is bowed down: they have digged a pit before me; they are fallen into the midst thereof themselves.  My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing, yea, I will sing praises. Awake up, my glory; awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake right early. I will give thanks unto thee, O Lord, among the peoples: I will sing praises unto thee among the nations. For thy mercy is great unto the heavens, and thy truth unto the skies. Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens; let thy glory be above all the earth.

 

 

 

Make haste to open to me the embraces of the Father; prodigally have I squandered my life, but upon the inexhaustible riches of thy mercies do I gaze, O Saviour. Now despise not my heart that is become impoverished. For unto thee, O Lord, with compunction do I cry: I have sinned, O Father, against heaven and before thee.

 

Glory. When thou comest, O God, to judge the earth with glory, and all things shall tremble, and a river of fire shall flow before the judgment seat, and the books shall be opened, and the secret things shall be revealed, then deliver me from the unquenchable fire, and vouchsafe me to stand at thy right hand, O righteous Judge.

 

Both now. Unto thee, the Mother of God, do we all pray, O Virgin; with love do we flee into thy compassions and into thy grace. For we sinners have thee as a help in temptations, the only all-immaculate one.

Psalm 33. I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the meek shall hear thereof, and be glad. O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together. I sought the LORD, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears. They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces shall never be confounded. This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them. O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. O fear the LORD, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him. The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing. Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD. What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good? Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile. Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it. The eyes of the LORD are toward the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry. The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth. The righteous cried, and the LORD heard, and delivered them out of all their troubles. The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all. He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken. Evil shall slay the wicked: and they that hate the righteous shall be condemned. The LORD redeemeth the soul of his servants: and none of them that trust in him shall be condemned.

 

Psalm 38. I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, while the wicked is before me. I was dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good; and my sorrow was stirred. My heart was hot within me; while I was musing the fire kindled: then spake I with my tongue: LORD, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is; let me know how frail I am. Behold, thou hast made my days as handbreadths; and mine age is as nothing before thee: surely every man at his best estate is altogether vanity.  Surely every man walketh in a vain shew: surely they are disquieted in vain: he heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them. And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee. Deliver me from all my transgressions: make me not the reproach of the foolish. I was dumb, I opened not my mouth; because thou didst it. Remove thy stroke away from me: I am consumed by the blow of thine hand. When thou with rebukes dost correct man for iniquity, thou makest his beauty to consume away like a moth: surely every man is vanity.  Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear unto my cry; hold not thy peace at my tears: for I am a stranger with thee, a sojourner, as all my fathers were. O spare me, that I may recover strength, before I go hence, and be no more. 

 

Psalm 40. Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the LORD will deliver him in the day of evil. The LORD will preserve him, and keep him alive, and he shall be blessed upon the earth; and deliver not thou him unto the will of his enemies. The LORD will support him upon the couch of languishing: thou makest all his bed in his sickness. I said, O LORD, have mercy upon me: heal my soul; for I have sinned against thee. Mine enemies speak evil against me, saying, When shall he die, and his name perish? And if he come to see me, he speaketh vanity; his heart gathereth iniquity to itself: when he goeth abroad, he telleth it. All that hate me whisper together against me: against me do they devise my hurt. An evil disease, say they, cleaveth fast unto him: and now that he lieth he shall rise up no more. Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me. But thou, O LORD, have mercy upon me, and raise me up, that I may requite them. By this I know that thou delightest in me, because mine enemy doth not triumph over me. And as for me, thou upholdest me in mine integrity, and settest me before thy face for ever. Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting and to everlasting. Amen, and Amen. 

 

 

 

Visit my humble soul, O Lord, who have squandered my whole life in sins. But as the harlot receive me and save me.

 

Glory. All my life have I squandered prodigally with harlots, O Lord, wretched one that I am; even as the prodigal, with compunction I cry out: O Heavenly Father, I have sinned; cleanse me, and receive me, and cast me not away from thyself, who have departed from thee, and who am now become impoverished by unfruitful deeds.

 

Both now. Unto the God-bearer let us sinners now run diligently, with humility prostrating ourselves, and with repentance, crying out from the depths of the soul: O Lady, help, having had mercy upon us; make haste, for we perish from the multitude of sins; turn not away thine empty servants, for thee alone do have we as a helper.

Psalm 69. Make haste, O God, to deliver me; make haste to help me, O LORD. Let them be ashamed and confounded that seek after my soul: let them be turned backward and brought to dishonour that delight in my hurt. Let them be turned back by reason of their shame that say, Aha, Aha. Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee; and let such as love thy salvation say continually, Let God be magnified. But I am poor and needy; make haste unto me, O God: thou art my help and my deliverer; O LORD, make no tarrying.

 

Psalm 70. In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust: let me never be ashamed. Deliver me in thy righteousness, and rescue me: bow down thine ear unto me, and save me. Be thou to me a rock of habitation, whereunto I may continually resort: thou hast given commandment to save me; for thou art my rock and my fortress. Rescue me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked, out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man. For thou art my hope, O Lord GOD: thou art my trust from my youth. By thee have I been holden up from the womb: thou art he that took me out of my mother’s bowels: my praise shall be continually of thee. I am as a wonder unto many; but thou art my strong refuge. My mouth shall be filled with thy praise, and with thy honour all the day. Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth. For mine enemies speak concerning me; and they that watch for my soul take counsel together, Saying, God hath forsaken him: pursue and take him; for there is none to deliver. O God, be not far from me: O my God, make haste to help me. Let them be ashamed and consumed that are adversaries to my soul; let them be covered with reproach and dishonour that seek my hurt. But I will hope continually, and will praise thee yet more and more. My mouth shall tell of thy righteousness, and of thy salvation all the day; for I know not the numbers thereof. I will come with the mighty acts of the Lord GOD: I will make mention of thy righteousness, even of thine only. O God, thou hast taught me from my youth; and hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works. Yea, even when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have declared thy strength unto the next generation, thy might to every one that is to come. Thy righteousness also, O God, is very high; thou who hast done great things, O God, who is like unto thee? Thou, which hast shewed us many and sore troubles, shalt quicken us again, and shalt bring us up again from the depths of the earth. Increase thou my greatness, and turn again and comfort me. I will also praise thee with the psaltery, even thy truth, O my God: unto thee will I sing praises with the harp, O thou Holy One of Israel. My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing praises unto thee; and my soul, which thou hast redeemed. My tongue also shall talk of thy righteousness all the day long: for they are ashamed, for they are confounded, that seek my hurt. 

 

Psalm 76. I will cry unto God with my voice; even unto God with my voice, and he wilt give ear unto me. In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord: my hand was stretched out in the night, and slacked not; my soul refused to be comforted. I remember God, and am disquieted: I complain, and my spirit is overwhelmed.  Thou holdest mine eyes watching: I am so troubled that I cannot speak. 

I have considered the days of old, the years of ancient times. I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune with mine own heart; and my spirit made diligent search. Will the Lord cast off for ever? and will he be favourable no more? Is his mercy clean gone for ever? doth his promise fail for evermore? Hath God forgotten to be gracious? hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies?  And I said, This is my infirmity; but I will remember the years of the right hand of the Most High. I will make mention of the deeds of the LORD; for I will remember thy wonders of old. I will meditate also upon all thy work, and muse on thy doings. Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary: who is a great god like unto God? Thou art the God that doest wonders: thou hast made known thy strength among the peoples. Thou hast with thine arm redeemed thy people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph.  The waters saw thee, O God; the waters saw thee, they were afraid: the depths also trembled. The clouds poured out water; the skies sent out a sound: thine arrows also went abroad. The voice of thy thunder was in the whirlwind; the lightnings lightened the world: the earth trembled and shook. Thy way was in the sea, and thy paths in the great waters, and thy footsteps were not known. Thou leddest thy people like a flock, by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

 

 

 

I ponder the terrible day and weep over my evil deeds; how shall I answer the Immortal King? Or with what boldness shall I look upon the Judge, prodigal that I am? O compassionate Father, O Only-begotten Son, O Holy Spirit, have mercy on us.

 

Glory. In the valley of weeping, at the place where thou hast appointed, when thou shalt sit, O Merciful One, to render righteous judgment, expose not my hidden things, nor put me to shame before the angels, but spare me, O God, and have mercy on me.

 

Now and ever. Open to us the doors of mercy, O blessed God-bearer and Virgin; hoping on thee we shall not perish, but through thee may we be delivered from calamities, for thou art the salvation of the Christian race.

Psalm 101. Hear my prayer, O LORD, and let my cry come unto thee. Hide not thy face from me in the day of my distress: incline thine ear unto me; in the day when I call answer me speedily. For my days consume away like smoke, and my bones are burned as a firebrand. My heart is smitten like grass, and withered; for I forget to eat my bread. By reason of the voice of my groaning my bones cleave to my flesh. I am like a pelican of the wilderness; I am become as an owl of the waste places. I watch, and am become like a sparrow that is alone upon the housetop. Mine enemies reproach me all the day; they that are mad against me do curse by me. For I have eaten ashes like bread, and mingled my drink with weeping. Because of thine indignation and thy wrath: for thou hast taken me up, and cast me away. My days are like a shadow that declineth; and I am withered like grass. But thou, O LORD, shalt abide for ever; and thy memorial unto all generations. Thou shalt arise, and have mercy upon Zion: for it is time to have pity upon her, yea, the set time is come. For thy servants take pleasure in her stones, and have pity upon her dust. So the nations shall fear the name of the LORD, and all the kings of the earth thy glory: For the LORD hath built up Zion, he hath appeared in his glory; He hath regarded the prayer of the destitute, and hath not despised their prayer. This shall be written for the generation to come: and a people which shall be created shall praise the LORD. For he hath looked down from the height of his sanctuary; from heaven did the LORD behold the earth; To hear the sighing of the prisoner; to loose those that are appointed to death; That men may declare the name of the LORD in Zion, and his praise in Jerusalem; When the peoples are gathered together, and the kingdoms, to serve the LORD. 

He weakened my strength in the way; he shortened my days. I said, O my God, take me not away in the midst of my days: thy years are throughout all generations. Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the work of thy hands. They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed: But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end. The children of thy servants shall continue, and their seed shall be established before thee. 

 

Prayer of Manasses. O LORD Almighty, that art in heaven, thou God of our fathers, of Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and of their righteous seed; who hast made heaven and earth, with all the ornament thereof; who hast bound the sea by the word of thy commandment; who hast shut up the deep, and sealed it by thy terrible and glorious name; whom all things fear, yea, tremble before thy power; for the majesty of thy glory cannot be borne, and the anger of thy threatening toward sinners is importable: thy merciful promise is unmeasurable and unsearchable; for thou art the Lord Most High, of great compassion, longsuffering and abundant in mercy, and repentest of bringing evils upon men. Thou, O Lord, according to thy great goodness hast promised repentance and forgiveness to them that have sinned against thee: and of thine infinite mercies hast appointed repentance unto sinners, that they may be saved. Thou therefore, O Lord, that art the God of the just, hast not appointed repentance to the just, to Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, which have not sinned against thee; but thou hast appointed repentance unto me that am a sinner: for I have sinned above the number of the sands of the sea. My transgressions are multiplied, O Lord: my transgressions are multiplied, and I am not worthy to behold and see the height of heaven for the multitude of mine iniquities. I am bowed down with many iron bands, that I cannot lift up mine head by reason of my sins, neither have I any respite: for I have provoked thy wrath, and done that which is evil before thee: I did not thy will, neither kept I thy commandments: I have set up abominations, and have multiplied detestable things. Now therefore I bow the knee of mine heart, beseeching thee of grace. I have sinned, O Lord, I have sinned, and I acknowledge mine iniquities: but, I humbly beseech thee, forgive me, O Lord, forgive me, and destroy me not with mine iniquities. Be not angry with me for ever, by reserving evil for me; neither condemn me into the lower parts of the earth. For thou, O Lord, art the God of them that repent; and in me thou wilt shew all thy goodness: for thou wilt save me, that am unworthy, according to thy great mercy. And I will praise thee for ever all the days of my life: for all the host of heaven doth sing thy praise, and thine is the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

 

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee (bow), we glorify thee (bow), we give thanks to thee for thy great glory (bow). O Lord, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty, and Lord, only begotten Son Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit. O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy, thou only art the Lord, Jesus Christ, to the glory of God the Father, amen. 

Every day will I bless thee, and I will praise thy name forever, yea, forever and ever.

Vouchsafe, O Lord, to keep us this day without sin. Blessed art thou, O Lord, God of our fathers, and praised and glorified is thy name forever, amen.

Let thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us, even as we have hoped in thee. Blessed art thou, O Lord, teach us thy statutes. Blessed art thou, Master, make us to understand thy statutes. Blessed art thou, Holy One, enlighten us with thy statutes.

Lord, thou hast been our refuge from generation to generation. I said, Lord, have mercy upon me, heal my soul; for I have sinned against thee. Lord, I have fled unto thee, teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God; for with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light. Continue thy mercy unto those that know thee.

 

 

Magnifying I magnify thee, O Lord, for thou hast looked upon my humility, and thou hast not shut me up in the hands of enemies, but thou hast saved my soul from troubles. And now, O Master, may thy hand cover me, and may thy mercy come upon me, for my soul is troubled, and in pain is its departure from this my wretched and stinking body. Lest at some time the evil counsel of the adversary meet it, and trip it up in darkness, on account of the unknown and known sins that were mine in this life, be merciful to me, O Master, and let not my soul behold the dark gaze of the evil demons, but let thy bright and all-radiant angels receive it. Grant glory to thy holy name, and by thy power lead me up unto thy divine judgment. When I am judged, let not the hand of the prince of this world take me, to tear me, a sinner, away into the depths of hell. But stand by me, and be my Saviour and Defender. For these bodily torments are joy unto thy servants. Have mercy, O Lord, on my soul that was defiled by the passions of this life, and receive it clean for the sake of repentance and confession. For thou art blessed unto the ages of ages, amen.

 

 

 

With a merciful eye, O Lord, behold my humility. For little by little my life is coming to an end, and from deeds there is no salvation. For this cause do I pray: with a kind-hearted eye, O Lord, behold my humility and save me.

 

Glory. My life is coming to an end, and thy fearful throne is being prepared, my life is passing by, judgment awaits me, threatening me with fiery torment and unquenchable flame. Grant me a cloud of tears and quench its power, thou who desirest all men to be saved.

 

Now and ever. Thou who for our sake wast born of a Virgin, and didst endure crucifixion, O Good One, and didst overthrow death by death, and as God didst show forth the Resurrection, disdain not them that thou hast made with thine hand. Show forth thy love toward man, O Merciful One. Receive the God-bearer that bore thee and intercedeth for us; and save, O our Saviour, a sinful people

Forgive, absolve, and pardon our sins, O God, both voluntary and involuntary, those done in word and deed, those done in knowledge or in ignorance, those of the mind and of thoughts, those by day and by night; forgive them all, for thou art good and the Lover of mankind, amen.

 

 

O Lord who lovest mankind, forgive those who hate and harm us. Do good unto those who do good. Unto our brethren and all our kin, and those who have gone astray, grant all their requests unto salvation, and eternal life. Bow.

 

Unto the sick grant visitation and healing. Unto the imprisoned grant freedom. Unto those sailing upon the seas grant guidance. Unto travelers grant quickness and direction. Bow.

 

Remember, O Lord, our brethren in captivity, the fellow-believers of the Orthodox faith, and deliver them from every evil circumstance. Bow.

 

Have mercy, O Lord, on those who have given us alms and commanded us, unworthy as we are, to pray for them; forgive and have mercy on them. Bow.

 

Have mercy, O Lord, on those who labor and serve us, who love and feed us, and grant them all that is needful unto salvation and eternal life. Bow. 

 

Remember, O Lord, our fathers and brethren who have passed away before us, and grant them repose where shineth the light of thy countenance. Bow.

 

Remember, O Lord, our weakness and poverty, enlighten our minds with the light of understanding of thy Holy Gospel, and guide us on the path of thy commandments, by the prayers of thy most Pure Mother and all thy saints, amen. Bow.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, for the sake of the prayers of thy Most-pure Mother, the honourable and life-giving Cross, the holy heavenly bodiless powers, our venerable and God-bearing fathers, the holy Prophet David, (and the saints of the day) and of all the saints, have mercy and save me, a sinner, for thou art Good, and the Lover of mankind.
