And it came to pass, as he was going along on the sabbaths through the grainfields, his disciples began to make a way, plucking the ears. And the Pharisees were saying to him: “Behold, why are they doing on the sabbaths that which is not lawful?” And he saith to them: “Have ye never read what David did, when he had need and hungered, he and those who were with him? How he entered into the house of God, in the days of Abiathar the high priest, to eat the bread of the presentation, which it was not lawful to eat except for the priests, and gave also to those who were with him?” And he said to them: “The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath. Therefore the Son of man is lord also of the sabbath.”
