Psalm 9

I shall confess unto thee, O Lord, with my whole heart: I shall tell forth all thy wonders. I shall rejoice and be glad in thee: I shall sing unto thy name, O most high. When mine enemy be turned back, they shall be made feeble and perish before thy face. For thou hast wrought my judgment and my cause. Thou hast sat upon the throne judging righteousness. Thou hast rebuked the Heathen, and the ungodly one hath perished: his name hast thou blotted out for ever and ever.1 The weapons of the enemy have failed unto the end, and thou hast destroyed the cities. His memorial hath perished with a tumult, but2 the Lord abideth for ever. He hath prepared his throne for judgment, and he shall judge the world in righteousness. He shall judge the peoples in righteousness. And the Lord is become a refuge for the poor, a helper in due time of trouble. And let them that know thy name put their trust in thee, for thou hast not forsaken them that seek thee, O Lord. Sing unto the Lord, that dwelleth in Sion: shew the people of his doings. For he that requireth their blood hath remembered them: he hath not forgotten the cry of the poor. Have mercy upon me, O Lord; behold mine affliction from mine enemies. Thou that liftest me up from the gates of death, that I may declare all thy praises in the gates of the daughter of Sion. I shall rejoice in thy salvation; the Heathen are sunk down in the pit which they made. In this net which they hid, their foot is taken. The Lord is known by the judgments which he worketh; the sinner is trapped in the work of his own hands. Let the sinners be turned back into hell; all the Heathen that forget God. For the poor shall not be utterly forgotten, the patience of the needy shall not perish unto the end. Lord, rise thou up, let not man grow in strength. Let the Heathen be judged before thee. O Lord, set a lawmaker over them, that the Heathen understand that they are men. Why, O Lord, dost thou stand afar off? Thou overlookest us in due time, in tribulation. In the pride of the ungodly, the poor man is set aflame; they are ensnared in the counsels which they devise. For the sinner is praised in the desires of his soul, and he that doeth wrong blesseth himself. The sinner provoketh the Lord; according to the multitude of his wrath, he will not seek after him. God is not before him; his ways are defiled at all times. Thy judgments are removed from before his face. He shall prevail over all his enemies. For he hath said in his heart: I shall not be moved from generation to generation, without evil. His mouth is full of cursing, and bitterness, and guile; travail and sorrow is under his tongue. He sitteth in ambush with rich men, in secret places to slay the innocent. His eyes are set upon the poor; he lieth in secret places like as a lion in his den. He lurketh for to ravish the poor; to ravish the needy when he draweth him in. In his net he shall humble him; he shall bow down and fall, when he prevaileth against the poor. For he hath said in his heart: God hath forgotten; he hath turned away his face, that he see not unto the end. Arise, O Lord my God, let thy hand be lifted up; forget not thy poor unto the end. Wherefore hath the ungodly provoked God to wrath; for he hath said in his heart: he will not seek. Thou seest it, for thou beholdest toil and wrath, that it may be delivered into thy hand. Unto thee is the poor man left; be thou a helper unto the orphan. Break thou the arm of the sinner and of the wicked. His sin shall be sought, and it shall not be found. The Lord is King for ever, and unto ages of ages. The Heathen shall perish from his land. Lord, thou hast heard the desire of the poor; thine ear hath hearkened unto the preparation of their heart. Judge the orphan and the humble, that man may no more magnify himself upon the earth. Judge thou the meek and the orphan, that man may no more magnify himself upon the earth.

  1. For ever and ever is an idiomatic English translation from the equally idiomatic Greek and Slavonic Unto the age and unto the age of ages. The English idiom is so ubiquitous that the literal translation here is awkward to the point of distraction. ↩︎

  2. Literally “and”. ↩︎
