Khirothesia
Khirothesia is the ordination of a lower church minister — a reader or candle-bearer. These lower church ministers do not receive the grace of the priesthood but are appointed by the bishop’s blessing to serve in the church through reading and singing.
The duties of a reader include reciting the appointed psalms and prayers during the divine services. When reading the Epistle, the six psalms, or proclaiming the prokimen, the reader stands on the ambo (a raised platform). The vestment of a reader is the stichar, which is worn over the cassock (kaftan).
The candle-bearer carries a candle during processions with the censer and the Gospel, and on other similar occasions. His responsibilities also include preparing the censer, lighting the candles in the church, and ringing the bells.
